Eating from the Garden
Fourth and Fifth graders will plant their own garden at the Farm, care for it, harvest the produce and eat what they have grown.  A nutritionist from the University of Missouri Extension will be at each class to provide learning about plant science and nutrition.

Our past events have included:

Grand Opening - During some of the hottest days of August of 2010, thousands of visitors from throughout the country enjoyed the Grand Opening of Poplar Heights Farm to the public.  Thank you to all who participated in making this event such a huge success!

America by Food - For two fall months in 2005, Poplar Heights farm hosted the Smithsonian traveling exhibit “key Ingredients: America by Food”.  Click the button at the left for more information.

World War II - the Bates County Home Front with exhibits and demonstrations showing how those who remained at home supported the war effort. Demonstrations included soap making, canning, and various techniques that were used to preserve resources.

Open Houses - with exhibits and demonstrations highlighting life at the turn of the century. Demonstrations included sheep shearing, broom making, quilting, stone cutting, lace making, and a variety of other important crafts. A group of appropriately attired young musicians performed music from the civil war era through the early 20th century.

Celebrate America's country heritage - "Milk" Nadine the wooden cow and sample dairy products.  There will be heritage craft demonstrators - spinners, weavers, blacksmith, broom maker, rope maker, and more. Old time musicians, food booths, special kids activities, wagon rides.

Taste the Flavors of Yesterday
Join us for a day of remembering the tastes of yesterday’s heirloom fruits & vegetables. Sample Melons, Salsa, Soup, Relishes, Creamsicles & Drinks. Learn how to safely can your garden’s bounty, make herbal vinegars, shop for specialty soaps and enjoy the tastes and tours of the farm.

Evening at the Farm
Relax after a long days work on the farm and join us for a bonfire and wagon rides. We'll have the marshmallows, you're welcome to bring your own hot dogs and chips or picnic snacks. Play a game of soft ball or horse shoes, put the chickens to bed, let the kids run off that extra summer energy.

Shuck corn, weave a potholder, make a bird house (extra cost of $5.00) and pinecone bird feeder, sample popcorn, toasted soybeans, squash puddings.  stock the root cellar for the winter

Family History Class
Start digging up your family tree with this introductory class in Family History.  Learn about on-line research sites, area genealogy libraries, how to record and keep your data, getting past dead ends, publishing your results.  This class is held at Poplar Heights Farm's Family History Center in Butler, Missouri.

Celebrate the start of the Advent season - join us for a Yule Log Hunt, hot chocolate, and marshmallows around the bonfire - tour the decorated house and learn about Victorian Christmas traditions - Kids can make a Christmas Card or Christmas tree ornament.
